Fun Facts and Constraints:

  • Special status species that have the potential to occur in the Pier 1 study area:
    • Winter-Run Chinook Salmon
    • Central California Steelhead
    • Double-Crested Cormorant
    • California Least Tern
    • California Brown Pelican
    • American Peregrine Falcon
    • California Sea Lion
    • Harbor Seal
  • Total Pier 1 Bay Fill (over covering of area formerly open water): 7,510 square feet
  • Required pile removal and replacement would affect “filter feeder organisms” such as mussels, sponges and tunicates—these were not considered significant impacts as they quickly reestablish themselves
  • Pile removal and replacement suspended December-March 1999 during herring spawning and hatching season
  • To reduce any possible negative effects on the winter run of Chinook salmon and steelhead, there could be no hydraulic dredging in the Bay from November 30-June 1
