SMWM/Perkins+Will began its workplace study engagement with Prologis. Drawing on key workspace precedents, ranging from the Alcoa headquarters in Pittsburgh to the Chiat/Day headquarters in Los Angeles, Prologis began the process of investigating successful workplace precedents that untie business objectives with design. Many of the case studies reflected the evolution of workplace design through the 20th century, from the Johnson Wax Building to the Crown-Zellerbach building to Chiat/Day’s headquarters. In all of these examples, organizational identity and space are tightly linked, reflecting the overall culture of the organization. This would also prove to be true for Prologis’ Pier 1 headquarters.
